Safety communications

During an event the club will establish a localised safety radio network consisting of VHF radios.
Details of channels, callsigns and instruction on radio usage will be provided for each event but the following is helpful generic advice for novice radio users.

The radiocheck

A: "Hello B this is A radio check over"
B: "B. Ok over"
A "A. Ok out"

Negative radiocheck

A: "Hello B this is A radio check over"
A: "Hello B this is A radio check over"
A: "Hello B this is A radio check over"
A "A. Nothing heard out"

Tips

  • Speak slowly and clearly to save repetition
  • Do not shout. You won't increase your range but will create a noisy distorted transmission
  • Do not engage in idle chatter. Keep communications to a minimum and the channel clear
  • Hold your radio vertically. Holding it sideways reduces your signal to the receiving station by 30%
  • Use charged/fresh batteries. Handheld radio's power output are proportionate to how good their batteries are and how old they are. Bin them if they are more than 3 years old.
  • PRESS....PAUSE.....before you speak. There is a slight delay when you press the button to talk
  • Use your callsign even if you're familiar with the other caller. It is a broadcast network and everyone needs to know who is talking.
  • Avoid obstacles. If you're stood next to a metal rack and having difficulty speaking, move away from it into a clear area. Beware of large buildings etc as they will shield your signal
  • Try moving a little. Sometimes moving just a foot can fix your comms problem's due to the way reflected waves cancel each other out

Relay procedure

The range of the radios is limited. Sometimes a station in the middle may need to pass a message using the 'through me' procedure.
If station A cannot raise station C then station B can offer to relay for A by offering 'through me'. Station B will receive A's message then respond '...roger out to you, hello C this is B message from A over'.
